About the Role

A Substation Wireman installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring and equipment in substations, ensuring safe, reliable operation of high-voltage power systems. This position is responsible for installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems within substations—the facilities that step down high-voltage transmission power for local distribution. They handle components such as transformers, circuit breakers, protective relays, and switchgear, and must comply with strict safety regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair wiring and electrical components in substations.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical documents.
• Conduct inspections, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment.
• Perform switching operations and system upgrades as directed.
• Respond to emergencies and restore power after outages.
• Document work, update service records, and maintain organized work areas.
• Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and other electrical staff.
• Train and mentor junior staff when assigned.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and use proper PPE.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; completion of an electrical training program.
• Completion of an electrical apprenticeship or equivalent (often 3 years) and passing the IBEW exam.
• Knowledge of electrical theory, wiring methods, and high-voltage systems.
• Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA, and control/communication systems.
• Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varied weather conditions.
• Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• Physical stamina for manual labor.

Success Factors

• OSHA 1910.269 and NFPA 70E compliance knowledge.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.
• Ability to lift up to 80 lbs multiple times during a work shift.
• Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team with co-workers.
• English usage sufficient to keep records, place orders, and prepare simple narrative reports.
• Willingness and ability to learn additional skills.

Additional Requirements

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Driver’s License within two weeks of employment.
• Must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
