Winter Reserve Snow Plow Operator

About the role

Winter Reserve Snow Plow Operator positions (3 total) are available with the Department of Transportation, Division of Operations in Tyndall (2 openings) and Menno (1 opening). The role is temporary/seasonal, non‑benefited, and exempt from civil service. The normal winter season runs approximately September 24 through May 8, and positions may be filled before the closing date of March 31, 2027.

Responsibilities

• Perform snow and ice removal on State highways during inclement weather.
• Complete general maintenance assignments as needed.
• Receive training on equipment and procedures.

Requirements

• Be at least 18 years of age and able to operate heavy equipment.
• Hold a valid driver’s license and a Class A or Class B CDL with a N: Tank Vehicles endorsement (or obtain the endorsement within 30 days of hire).
• Submit to pre‑employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post‑accident, follow‑up accident, and return‑to‑duty drug and alcohol testing; employment offers are conditional on passing a drug screen.
• Authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record.
• Be willing to report for work during inclement weather, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, early mornings, and evenings.
• Be able to reach the assigned DOT shop within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions after being notified.

Pay

Minimum salary: $22.80 – $24.60 per hour, based on experience.

Schedule

Hours vary with winter severity; work occurs only when winter conditions affect travel. The typical winter season spans September 24 to May 8.
