Wingspan Peer Tutor - Student Hourly
KU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. The Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas.
About the role
Peer Tutors meet with students regularly to review content in a specific class. They are student role models who enjoy engaging their peers in the learning process. Tutors are hired year-round, although the need for additional tutors will vary during the semester and between semesters.
Peer Tutors will support tutoring for classes they received a B or higher in. Tutors must be available to tutor for a minimum of 6 hours per week through the last week of classes. To prepare for their roles, Peer Tutors are expected to attend Peer Tutor Training prior to their start date.
Responsibilities
- 70% - Facilitate and Foster Student Learning
- Engage students in learning course/subject content.
- Suggest appropriate study strategies to learn course/subject content.
- Facilitate in-person, virtual, and/or drop-in tutoring appointments and support.
- Create an encompassing and safe environment for learning.
- 20% - Training and Professional Development
- Attend scheduled professional development and tutoring training meetings.
- Complete asynchronous professional development and tutoring training as assigned.
- Attend all mandatory training upon hire and as scheduled throughout each semester by the Tutoring Program Manager.
- 5% - Tutoring Program Support
- Help prepare materials and resources for tutoring sessions.
- Provide updates and insights to the Tutoring Program Manager to enhance the tutoring program.
- 5% - Other Tasks as Assigned
Requirements
- Earned a B or higher in the course(s) selected to tutor at KU or an equivalent course that credit was transferred for from another college institution within the last 4 years; or in a higher-level course in the same discipline, as evidenced by the Degree Progress Report (DPR) or unofficial transcript. Consideration may be given in unique circumstances to students interested in tutoring a course they have not taken, per approval of the Tutoring Program Manager.
- Student must be in good academic standing.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must:
- Have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester, or
- Be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours, or
- Be enrolled in summer session, or
- Be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
- Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
- Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
- This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
- Peer Tutors are expected to work 6-20 hours per week for the full length of the Fall 2026 semester, excluding academic breaks.
