Wine Steward
About the Role
As a Wine Steward at Giant Eagle, you’ll create points of difference from our competition by enhancing the customer shopping experience. You’ll offer recommendations for wine, food, and entertainment, helping to position our stores as the premier destination for wine and beer. Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong knowledge, interest, and passion for wine and related products.
- Participate in ongoing product and customer service training programs; attend distributor trade shows as necessary.
- Understand and adhere to all relevant local, state, and federal laws/guidelines, as well as company policies, including reporting any violations.
- Participate in in-store team meetings, regional meetings, and daily team huddles.
- Ensure compliance with state liquor laws and company policies regarding alcohol sales, including identifying and preventing sales to underage or intoxicated individuals.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment, tables, utensils, and floors to ensure safety and sanitation.
- Visit competitors regularly (at least once a month) to stay informed about industry trends.
- Prioritize safety for team members, guests, and products.
- Assist customers with beer, wine, and liquor (B/W/L) purchases by providing knowledgeable recommendations.
- Lead by example to enable unparalleled guest service, striving to delight and surprise guests, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Take an active role in building the store’s beer and wine assortment by communicating with distributors and merchandising staff.
- Plan seasonal and major promotional operations with the Store Leader, including out-of-department display placement and tracking results.
- Oversee and maintain the wine list for the restaurant, making suggestions to complement the chef’s dishes.
- Implement marketing techniques to drive sales and execute merchandising programs to boost profit margins.
- Make knowledgeable and approachable recommendations to guests based on their tastes.
- Ensure beer, wine, and liquor (BWL) meets out-of-stock, shrink, and inventory level goals.
- Perform Team Leader duties in their absence, including directing, overseeing, and evaluating team member training.
- Develop unique customer tasting events and sampling programs.
- Write department orders, monitor ordering, and supervise stocking and receiving using automated ordering systems.
- Track and reduce out-of-stocks and participate in physical inventories.
- Utilize tools to reduce and eliminate shrink.
- Ensure proper ordering, receiving, stocking, and signage of BWL products.
Requirements
- 1 to 3 years of experience.
- Strong customer service experience; wine knowledge and/or wine industry experience desired.
- Experience in retail food, catering, or restaurant environments preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certificate from a sommelier organization (e.g., The Court of Master Sommeliers) strongly preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
