About the role
The job summary describes the role as performing semi-skilled winding and related work, inspecting, repairing, rebuilding, and assembling equipment sent to the Central Machine Shop, and performing similar or less skilled work as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Operates all motor shop tools to perform tasks such as burning out windings from stators, spray painting, steam cleaning, etc.
- Strips coils from motors and prepares them for dipping or "vpi" operations.
- Tapes jumper and series connections on motor stators, field connections on DC field frames, and forms coils.
- Disassembles and assembles DC motors up to 10hp and AC motors with one-piece end bells without sleeve bearings.
- Manufactures random wound coils and rewinds motors with four to eight poles.
- Cleans and spray paints generator components.
- Manufactures support blocking, wedges, and other necessary items required in the rewinding of motors and generators.
- Operates bridge cranes, hoists, fork trucks, etc., assigned to the shop.
- Performs maintenance work on the Central Machine Shop building and equipment.
- Assists, as directed, employees of equal or higher classification in carrying through work assignments.
- Supports AEP's cultural goals and expectations.
- Reports irregularities or abnormal conditions.
- Takes notes and keeps records as directed.
- Interfaces with outside resources assigned to assist in the work.
- Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.
- Learns new skills as shop support grows to meet the needs of customers.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED, or a combination of education and/or experience.
- Ability to perform the duties and/or responsibilities listed above as well as the ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skill to perform the duties and/or responsibilities of the key job in this family.

- Physical demand level is Medium
- Third class winders must demonstrate the skills and abilities contained within the job description or satisfactory progression toward these skills and abilities prior to the end of the probationary period; and also demonstrate the skills and ability required for promotion to second class within one year from the initial hiring date.
