About the role

The On-Call Biologist will provide a range of environmental consulting services, including construction monitoring, avian species identification and nest surveys, general and focused biological field surveys, and support. Responsibilities include assisting with writing and reviewing technical reports and supporting documents such as Biological Technical Reports, Biological Assessments, and technical memos, as well as providing as-needed field and office support to local and regional Natural Resource team members.

Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of environmental compliance work, ICF often hires environmental professionals as “On-Call” employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (usually a few weeks ahead of time, depending on client notifications) and are free to accept or refuse assigned hours. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment, provided there is no conflict of interest.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute field assignments for southern and central California-based work.
• Conduct general and species-specific biological surveys and construction compliance monitoring pursuant to relevant environmental commitments, laws, regulations, codes, and/or industry standards.
• Document field findings in monitoring logs, reports, memos, and email communications, as appropriate.
• Communicate with client field contacts and ICF project managers and senior biologists.
• Travel to remote field sites in counties including Los Angeles, Kern, San Bernardino, Tulare, Inyo, Kings, Fresno, Madera, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree.
• Valid driver's license and successful passing of a Motor Vehicles Records (MVR) check.

Preferred Skills

• 1+ years of environmental/consulting and biological field experience.
• Prior experience conducting construction field compliance monitoring on 2+ projects, including 6+ months total field compliance monitoring experience.
• Avian nest monitoring and species identification skills, with experience conducting nesting bird field surveys and avian habitat assessments on 3+ projects, at least 2 of which are located in the southwestern U.S.
• Experience leading all three phases of western burrowing owl protocol surveys on 3+ projects, including positive identification of individual owls in the wild.
• Experience conducting native special status reptile or amphibian species surveys or monitoring on 3+ projects with positive results and identification of target species.
• Experience leading field surveys or trapping for small mammals on 3+ California projects, including possession of a CDFW scientific collecting permit.
• Basic documentation/data management experience.
• Experience working in the environmental compliance and/or construction fields (e.g., biological construction monitoring).
• Basic botanical knowledge of central and southern California, with demonstrated participation in 5+ field botanical rare plant surveys and habitat mapping assessments in California, at least 3 of which are in southern or central California.
• Geographic Information System (GIS) software skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to respond timely to deployment requests (sometimes next day).
• Ability to travel to field sites in central and southern California and assist with field surveys and compliance monitoring in rugged, undeveloped terrain.
• Ability and experience conducting work in active construction sites and communicating with construction foremen and equipment operators.
• Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams).

Pay

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is: $50,386.00 - $125,408.00.
