About the Role

Join the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) in conserving the Commonwealth's fish and wildlife resources. This position is within the Wildlife Division, managing wildlife development and restoration activities on public lands in the Bluegrass Region, including Taylorsville Lake WMA, John A. Kleber WMA, John C. Williams WMA, Kentucky River WMA, Rolling Fork WMA, Marion County WMA and State Forest, Knobs State Forest and WMA, Twin Eagle WMA, T.N. Sullivan WMA, and Dr. James Rich WMA.

The Wildlife Biologist IV serves as the department specialist for forest lands management within the assigned area.

Responsibilities

• Develops, implements plans, and manages all habitat practices and population management on assigned wildlife management areas; supervises assigned staff.
• Maintains, promotes, and expands relationships and agreements with other agencies, organizations, sportsmen’s clubs, and groups.
• Conducts wildlife surveys and inventories; records data.
• Proficiently traps, bands, and identifies wildlife species; assists with prescribed burning as directed.
• Prepares technical reports of findings.
• Manages public hunts; collects wildlife data while operating biological check stations.
• Interacts and shares wildlife management information with the public and partners.
• Provides professional-level support to senior staff; serves as the regional specialist and source of expertise on forestry-related topics.
• Serves as Fire-In-The-Field program trainer and trains regional staff.
• Conducts data entry; assists in development and maintenance of annual budget, assigned area plans, administrative records, reports, and presentations.
• Attends meetings, gives professional presentations, and attends training courses and workshops as directed.
• Carries out special assignments as assigned.

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of the conservation provisions of the Federal Farm Bill.
• Knowledge of or practical experience with agricultural systems and farming.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with landowners and partner agencies.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision and with diverse clientele.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, conservation biology, natural resources, environmental sciences, or a related field.

Experience, Training, or Skills: Five years of professional experience in wildlife management, wildlife biology, and/or a related field.

• Substitute Education for Experience: A master’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, or a related field substitutes for one year of required experience. A PhD substitutes for two years of required experience.
• Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to employment and maintain it for the length of employment. Must be able to traverse rough and mountainous terrain with equipment.

Pay

$4,356.96 - $6,535.44 monthly.

Schedule

37.5 hours per week.

Working Conditions

Spends majority of time outdoors. Must be able to traverse rough and mountainous terrain with equipment.
