About the role
The Wildcat Farm Horticulture Intern supports the Wildcat Farm under the direction of the Farm Manager. Responsibilities include supervising cultivator apprentices, maintaining vegetable and perennial gardens, managing pests and nutrients, and providing greenhouse support. The intern will oversee harvests, prepare weekly Farm Boxes, and supervise high school interns while teaching them gardening skills.
Responsibilities
- Assist with community garden tasks, including hands-on outdoor work and indoor administrative duties.
- Supervise high school cultivator apprentices in garden tasks and projects.
- Build and foster community at the gardens by planning and facilitating events, workdays, and workshops.
- Assist with planting, maintenance, and harvesting of the Thriving vegetable garden and Mississinewa School gardens.
- Perform regular garden maintenance, including mowing, weed-whacking, and other tasks.
- Support communications and outreach to community gardeners and volunteers.
- Assist with marketing, website support, social media, and audio/visual content generation.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and IWU safety policies.
- Comply with processes and procedures established by Indiana Wesleyan University administration.
Requirements
- Strong Christian commitment and adherence to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in a related field; one year of horticultural field experience preferred.
- Proven ability to complete assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects.
Skills
- Capability to supervise apprentices and volunteers in daily garden tasks.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 40 lbs (e.g., bags of soil, mulch, planting).
- Willingness to work outdoors in various conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
