WIC Supervisor Nutrition (DOH/PHD/WIC #29020)

Salary: $27.37 - $41.06 hourly / $56,931 - $85,396 annually. This position is classified as Pay Band C7.

About the role

The New Mexico WIC Program, within the Department of Health and Food and Nutrition Bureau, safeguards the health of nutritionally at-risk low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children by providing nutritious foods, nutrition education, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition and cooking classes, and referrals to health care and social services.

The Nutritionist Supervisor oversees daily activities at the Midtown Public Health Office WIC clinic, ensuring efficient operations by assigning and supervising subordinate nutritionists and support staff. Responsibilities include screening applicants for eligibility, developing service-delivery objectives, managing staff recruitment and training, conducting performance evaluations, and maintaining clinic operations.

Responsibilities

• Manage and foster staff development to ensure accountability for quality clinical services.
• Mentor staff to align with NMDOH/PHD/Regional values and job expectations.
• Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching to WIC staff.
• Oversee daily WIC clinic operations, including nutritional education, group-facilitated nutrition classes, and breastfeeding support.
• Provide direct nutrition services: screening, assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation based on program guidelines.
• Ensure adherence to WIC policies, protocols, and procedures.
• Collaborate with community organizations and assist in food and nutrition programs.
• Counsel individuals and groups on nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, community health, education, nutrition, or a related field.
• Three years of experience in duties directly related to this classification.
• Any combination of education and direct experience totaling seven years may substitute for the required education and experience.
• Valid Driver’s License and current New Mexico Defensive Driving Course Certification (or ability to obtain as a condition of employment).

Skills

• Fluent in English and Spanish.
• Experience with data entry and retrieval from multiple information systems, including the New Mexico WIC Automated Data System.
• Experience recruiting, hiring, and coaching staff.
• Ability to provide or coordinate direct nutrition services.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in a clinic setting with a diverse, often non-English-speaking population, at auxiliary and community sites.
• Extensive use of computers, phones, and Visual/Video Display Terminals (VDT).
• Potential exposure to communicable diseases.
• Travel required for outreach, meetings, and training, occasionally involving overnight stays.
• Physical demands include standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, and stooping for extended periods; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
