About the Role
Work in this class involves providing basic nutrition services to clients eligible for the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infant, Children (WIC) in a local health department. Employees independently complete program eligibility statements and basic nutrition assessments, provide individual and small group nutrition counseling, and analyze clinical and nutritional data to prescribe appropriate supplemental foods. Responsibilities may also include executing contracts with vendors, training and monitoring vendors, and supervising clerical support functions. Clients with complex nutrition or medical problems are typically referred to other health professionals or a higher-level nutritionist.
Responsibilities
- Determine program eligibility based on financial and nutritional guidelines through referrals from health department clinics and private physicians.
- Perform nutrition assessments by evaluating anthropometric and biochemical measurements, socioeconomic conditions, and diet history.
- Develop and document nutrition care plans, including food prescriptions tailored to individual nutritional and developmental needs and preferences.
- Provide basic nutrition counseling on topics such as food groups, child development nutrition needs, and programmatic services.
- Conduct follow-up counseling sessions to encourage and ensure modified dietary habits.
- Participate in vendor monitoring, problem-solving, and training.
- Identify problem areas and determine appropriate programmatic or nutrition information for clients, focusing on food groups, proper diet habits, and nutritional requirements for pregnant women, infants, and children.
- Supervise clerical support functions associated with the program.
- Perform other related assignments as determined by management.
Requirements
- General knowledge of accepted nutritional and dietetic principles and practices.
- Basic knowledge of foods, nutrition, and infant and child development.
- Ability to maintain rapport with clients, collect and assimilate information, and communicate persuasively.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition, or public health nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university; or
- Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education–approved Didactic Program in Dietetics; or
- Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR) with Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, plus a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual (specify language).
- Experience working with young children.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint).
- Customer service experience.
