About the role

The WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) is responsible for determining WIC program eligibility of applicants and participants. The WNA will complete thorough nutrition and health assessments during certification and recertification appointments, provide basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support, prescribe and issue food benefits, participate in outreach and breastfeeding activities, and provide referrals to other TrueCare services and community programs.

During completion of the WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification Training, the WNA will primarily perform front-office and participant support functions.

Schedule

• 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM; Lunch 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM
• 2 late days per month: 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM; Lunch 12:45 PM to 1:45 PM
• One Saturday per month from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Location is Escondido; however, you may be assigned to provide onsite WIC coverage at our Ramona WIC office as needed.

Responsibilities

• Respond to incoming calls in a professional, courteous, and timely manner; assess caller needs and appropriately triage or route calls to the correct staff or department
• Orient new participants to the WIC Program, including services provided, WIC authorized foods, use of WIC card, participant Rights and Responsibilities, and what to expect at WIC appointments
• Accurately determine WIC program eligibility in accordance with policies and procedures using the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WIC WISE)
• Assess individual nutritional status and identify appropriate nutrition risks and interventions by reviewing biochemical (hemoglobin/hematocrit), anthropometric (length/height and weight), dietary, and health data in accordance with policies and procedures
• Complete thorough nutrition and health assessments during certification and recertification appointments, providing basic nutrition education and breastfeeding support using Participant Centered Education (PCE) principles and techniques; refer high-risk (HR) participants to the Degreed Nutritionist (DN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) for HR counseling and follow-up in accordance with policies and procedures
• Provide ongoing nutrition and breastfeeding education to WIC participants (via phone, video, or in person) based on their Nutrition Education Plan (NEP); accurately document Care Plans, Nutrition Education Contacts (NECs), and pertinent comments/alerts in WIC WISE
• Accurately prescribe and issue WIC food benefits; maintain card stock security
• Accurately schedule WIC appointments in accordance with department scheduling guidelines and in alignment with participants’ Nutrition Education Plans (NEPs)
• Utilize TrueCare’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system and CDPH/WIC approved systems to accurately assess and manage WIC participant data in compliance with confidentiality and privacy policies and procedures
• Promote and support breastfeeding as the recommended method of infant feeding in alignment with CDPH/WIC, TrueCare, and Breastfeeding Friendly Health Center guidelines
• Assist with the Electric Breast Pump Loan Program, including pump distribution, documentation, and cleaning
• Refer participants to other TrueCare services and community programs; document follow-up as needed
• Support WIC Program Administration through caseload maintenance activities, participation in workgroups, and outreach efforts
• Attend, complete, and actively participate in WIC Department Meetings, team huddles, continuing education, and trainings, as assigned
• Flexibility to work at assigned WIC location(s) based on department needs and/or goals

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience, healthcare preferred
• Strong typing and computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams)
• Bilingual in Spanish

Qualifications (Desired)

• Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in nutrition or another health-related field
• Knowledge of the WIC Program and maternal child health

Pay

The starting pay for this role is $23 per hour. During the lifespan of this role, pay can be increased up to $32.20 per hour.
