Wholesale Credit Underwriter (Dealer Credit)

As a Wholesale Credit Underwriter, you will support these goals by assessing credit facilities for an assigned group of commercial dealers while establishing and maintaining security perfection documentation and filings. You’ll directly impact customer satisfaction and business success by maintaining relationships with key dealership personnel and the VFS sales channel.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and monitor a portfolio of dealers using data dashboards, data analysis tools, AI, and various systems (SBS Wholesale Software, Risk Analyst, Quiktrak, Qlikview, Power BI, Moody’s Risk Analysis, etc.), including spreading financial statements.
- Maintain ownership and knowledge of dealer relationships regarding credit, audit, and operations from initiation onward.
- Provide analysis and recommend credit lines, lease lines, audit frequency, deal structure, and other facets of dealer performance to Wholesale Management, Region North America, and/or Global HQ.
- Underwrite working capital, term loans, and real estate transactions, including understanding real estate requirements, appraisals, and environmental reports.
- Manage assigned portfolio daily, including inventory management, over-line approvals, audit analysis, documentation review, security perfection review, reporting, and customer service.
- Ensure timely credit underwriting, annual reviews, and dealer monitoring.
- Identify issues based on financial, audit, or trending factors and propose risk mitigation strategies.
- Demonstrate deep understanding of security perfection, including UCC/PMSI, subordinations, and inter-creditor agreements.
- Collaborate with Manager Wholesale Credit & Risk and Legal teams to negotiate documents, security perfection, inter-creditor agreements, and subordinations.
- Coordinate dealer collection activities and risk mitigations during sold-out-of-trust (SOT) or financial distress situations, including onsite dealer visits.
- Proactively collaborate with Market Sales teams on dealer issues and opportunities to increase wholesale penetration or balances.
- Ensure compliance with local regulatory, Volvo Group, and VFS internal requirements.
- Complete security perfection searches and other applicable searches to ensure VFS collateral security perfection.
- Interact extensively with dealers, District Finance Managers (DFMs), Directors of Regional Sales, Business Analysts (BAs), and local market leaders to develop a holistic approach to the dealer.
- Drive efficient operational turnaround protocols for dealer funding, payment application, document preparation, and other tasks.
- Ensure accurate completion of credit and documentation files, including establishing dealer files and performing necessary verifications.
- Support Wholesale Analyst and Wholesale Credit Analyst activities.
- Mentor and train wholesale analysts on all aspects of credit, audit, and operations.
- Provide new employee training and internal cross-training on Wholesale activities.
- Partner with cross-functional teams (Credit, Risk, IT, Operations, Accounting, Legal) to drive process optimization, standardization, and automation initiatives.
- Document workflows, metrics, and control points to support continuous improvement (Volvo Performance System).
- Maintain a continuous improvement mindset to minimize risk and improve underwriting quality.
- Occasional travel required.
Requirements
- 5-7 years of experience in wholesale, commercial loan, or lease underwriting, preferably in the truck or heavy equipment industry.
- Expertise in financial analysis, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and projection analysis.
- Understanding of credit underwriting concepts such as spreading financials, EBITDA cash flow coverage, current ratio, leverage, absorption, tangible net worth, and inventory trust position.
- Knowledge of wholesale documentation requirements and security perfection.
- Leadership abilities, including organizational and prioritization skills, problem-solving, and relationship-building with customers and colleagues.
- Demonstrated experience working independently and exercising sound business judgment.
- BA/BS in Business or a related field; MBA is a plus.
- Fluency in English (reading, writing, speaking); proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
- Experience leveraging technical tools (AI, Microsoft Office Suite, Power BI, or similar) for data analysis and reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data modeling.
- Process improvement mindset, complemented by Volvo Performance System.
- Previous experience with SBS wholesale software credit capabilities and testing is a plus.
Pay
The base pay for this position is set at $96,000.00 - $121,000.00 annually, with eligibility for bonuses where applicable. The final salary is determined by factors including geographic location, work-related knowledge, certifications, skills, education, and experience. Pay equity and internal equity considerations are also part of the final offer.
