Whisker Operator

Responsibilities

  • Operate one whisker machine with the ability to operate either machine at a time.
  • Adjust dies, feed mechanisms, alignments, and all other machine parameters to achieve objectives.
  • Troubleshoot machine problems and replace worn or broken machine parts as required.
  • Escalate major equipment issues to the Maintenance Team.
  • Perform product changes when and where needed.
  • Load coils of flat steel on the turntables using a forklift.
  • Unload whiskers from the machine, bundle them, and package into boxes.
  • Weigh, move, and organize boxes of whiskers using carts and forklifts.
  • Meet all quality and production standards, minimizing scrap and downtime.
  • Label, package, and palletize boxes of whiskers for storage, inventory, and shipping.
  • Perform all job functions in a safe manner, following and enforcing all policies and procedures.
  • Lead housekeeping efforts and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Identify and communicate personnel and safety issues to the Shift Supervisor; assist with investigations and resolutions.
  • Communicate and work with Material Handlers to ensure appropriate quantity and quality of raw materials.
  • Report production and quality data accurately and completely, both manually and in computer systems.
  • Report continuous improvement opportunities to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Move materials as needed using forklifts or overhead cranes.

Requirements

  • Excellent safety and attendance record.
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating day and night shifts, reporting on time for scheduled shifts.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Basic knowledge of math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of production rates and schedules.
  • Ability to balance and achieve results in Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Cost Reduction.
  • Ability to complete two or more tasks simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated and able to work with little or no supervision.
  • Professional demeanor with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to take responsibility for self and team.
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Able to continually bend, stoop, crouch, reach above shoulder, use arms, wrists, grasp, and squeeze with hands.
  • Able to access constricted spaces and lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Able to withstand occasional exposure to dusty, dirty, hot, or cold ambient conditions.
  • Able to withstand occasional exposure to mild chemical irritants.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing equipment.

Training

Training includes a mixture of online modules on safety, quality, and production procedures, along with on-the-job training conducted by an experienced Whisker Operator. Additional training may be provided by Maintenance Technicians or the Maintenance Manager as needed. Training duration is typically 2 months.

Schedule

12-hour rotating day and night shifts.
