Wetlands & Water Levels (WWL) Research Technician

Department: The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) is located on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity, one hour south of the FSU main campus in Tallahassee. This position is based at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve in Eastpoint, Florida.

Responsibilities

• ANERR WWL program technician: Under direct supervision of the ANERR Research Coordinator (RC), assist in managing and coordinating all aspects of the Reserve’s Wetlands and Water Levels (WWL) program, including:
  • Maintenance of equipment
  • Data collection, management, QA/QC, and submission to the Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO) and other applicable databases
• Surface Elevation Table (SET) program:
  • Twice-annual data collection at all Reserve SET stations
  • Data entry, QA/QC, and submission to CDMO databases
• Porewater loggers:
  • Maintenance of equipment and wells
  • Data collection, management, and QA/QC
• Emergent vegetation data collection:
  • Coordinate with contractors for yearly data collection
  • Work with grant and administrative staff to ensure contract progress
  • Data entry, QA/QC, and submission to CDMO
• General ANERR Research Technician: Under direct supervision of the RC, assist with:
  • System-Wide Monitoring (SWMP) water quality, nutrient, and meteorological programs
  • Biological monitoring programs
  • Planning, coordinating, and executing research fieldwork, data management, and analysis
  • Participating in field and laboratory research activities
  • Coordinating boat trips with research team members
  • Assisting the RC with coordination of outside researchers
  • Delivering public presentations of Reserve data
  • Contributing to public and peer-reviewed scientific writing
• General ANERR Stewardship Assistance: Under supervision of the ANERR Stewardship Coordinator, assist with:
  • Emergent marsh and mangrove vegetation surveys
  • Sea turtle nesting surveys
  • Invasive plant surveys and treatments
  • Habitat mapping
  • Public use and access management

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in marine science, biology, wildlife, fisheries, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field; or a high school diploma/equivalent and four years of relevant experience (a combination of post-high school education and experience may substitute).
• Valid Florida or Georgia Driver’s License, or ability to obtain one prior to hire.
• Scientific diver certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
