About the role
The Wellness Coach I will build personalized relationships to support a positive member experience, oversee and manage the wellness area, and assist members with equipment usage. This role operates under the direction of the Wellness Director and ensures adherence to YMCA of Metro Atlanta policies and protocols, including scheduled cleaning of equipment and following member use.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the wellness center floor, assist members as needed, and enforce wellness center policies.
- Clean, maintain, and check equipment; report any repair needs to the supervisor.
- Apply Metro Atlanta YMCA risk and safety guidelines, best practices, and branch emergency procedures.
- Promote, monitor, evaluate, and ensure smooth operation of wellness programs with a high level of service to participants.
- Stay updated on current wellness program issues.
- Complete YUSA foundational courses for Health & Wellness within 60 days of hire:
- Orientation to Healthy Living
- Foundations of Listen First
- Principles of Member Health & Wellness
- Wellness Center at the Y
- Complete BLS training within 60 days of hire.
- Maintain all national and YUSA wellness certifications by meeting continuing education requirements (10 CECs every two years).
- Maintain BLS certification, renewing every 2 years.
- Secure a substitute coach if unable to work an assigned shift; ensure the request is accepted and approved.
- Attend all required staff meetings, trainings, and facility or equipment orientations prior to working on the wellness floor.
- Assist in all aspects of the YMCA and its community as needed.
- Maintain and report incident/accident paperwork.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Knowledge of general weightlifting, health/wellness concepts, and ability to demonstrate use of wellness-related equipment.
- Knowledgeable about fitness-related issues, including aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, nutrition, benefits of exercise, injury-prevention, and The Coach Approach.
- Must obtain/maintain full access to Y-Exchange, YLINK, and Metro Atlanta YMCA Workday account.
- Obtain YMCA/ACE online certification and supplemental courses required by Y-USA and Y-Metro Atlanta within 60 days of hire.
- Complete Wellness Coaching 101 Specialty Training.
- Maintain certifications by uploading continuing education credits via Y-Exchange prior to expiration.
- Possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and renew every 2 years; upload updated licenses via Y-Exchange.
- Visual and cognitive abilities to utilize computer-based and written materials for job responsibilities.
- High degree of human relations skills; ability to facilitate member interaction and socialization.
- Working knowledge of computers: MS Word, MS Excel, and database management.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, and problem-solve.
- Effective time-management skills.
- Strong customer service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitality.
Physical Demands
- Ergonomics: Sitting, bending, stooping, standing.
- 15% repetitive keyboard work.
- Demonstrating equipment use.
- Lifting up to 45 pounds.
- Exposure to noise levels averaging 90 decibels (music) over an eight-hour day.
Employment Requirements
- Pass a pre-employment background check, including criminal record check, drug screening, motor vehicle record (MVR), and reference check.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
