Welding/ Shop Supervisor
About the Role
A growing industrial manufacturer is seeking an experienced Weld & Machine Shop Supervisor to oversee welding and machining operations within a fast-paced fabrication environment. This position leads welders, machinists, CNC operators, and other shop personnel while ensuring production goals are achieved safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established quality requirements.
Responsibilities
- Shop Leadership
- Supervise and provide day-to-day direction to welders, machinists, CNC operators, and shop personnel.
- Assign work based on production priorities, project requirements, and employee capabilities.
- Train, mentor, and develop employees to improve technical skills, workmanship, and productivity.
- Conduct performance evaluations and address attendance or performance issues as needed.
- Promote cross-training and employee development across welding and machining functions.
- Support employee welding qualifications and certification requirements.
- Welding & Machining
- Oversee welding, fabrication, CNC machining, and conventional machining activities.
- Ensure work is completed according to blueprints, engineering drawings, welding procedures, tolerances, and specifications.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for welding and machining issues.
- Ensure proper operation of CNC equipment, mills, lathes, saws, welding equipment, and related shop machinery.
- Monitor tooling, welding consumables, gases, and other production supplies.
- Quality
- Ensure welding and machining operations meet established quality and workmanship standards.
- Verify machined components meet blueprint dimensions, tolerances, and specifications using appropriate precision measuring instruments.
- Support weld inspection and testing activities as required.
- Maintain compliance with applicable AWS, ASME, welding procedures, and customer requirements.
- Participate in root-cause investigations and corrective actions involving quality issues or nonconforming material.
- Safety
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout shop operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, company safety procedures, and applicable industry standards.
- Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, audits, and employee training.
- Ensure employees properly use PPE and safely operate welding and machining equipment.
- Production & Continuous Improvement
- Coordinate shop activities to meet production schedules and delivery requirements.
- Monitor workflow, labor utilization, productivity, and production output.
- Identify opportunities to reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, improve quality, and increase throughput.
- Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and other continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Assist with capacity planning and staffing based on changing production requirements.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and equipment repairs with maintenance personnel.
- Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, Maintenance, Purchasing, and Operations.
- Participate in production planning meetings and communicate priorities to shop personnel.
- Resolve technical problems, production constraints, and schedule issues.
- Support internal, customer, and third-party audits or inspections when required.
- Track shop performance related to safety, quality, productivity, and delivery.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree in Welding Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline preferred.
- 5+ years of welding and/or machining experience.
- 3–5 years of supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Strong working knowledge of welding processes, machining operations, CNC equipment, fabrication practices, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience supervising welders, machinists, and/or CNC operators.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, welding specifications, and GD&T.
- Knowledge of AWS, ASME, and related welding/manufacturing standards strongly preferred.
- Welding certifications or equivalent technical qualifications are highly desirable.
- Experience with precision measuring and inspection equipment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing safety and quality requirements.
- ERP/MRP and production-scheduling experience preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Work Environment
This position works primarily within a heavy manufacturing and metal-fabrication environment. Conditions may include elevated noise levels, dust, metal particles, welding operations, machining equipment, and other typical shop-floor conditions. The position requires regular presence on the production floor and appropriate PPE. Employees may be required to stand and walk for extended periods, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
