Welding Engineering Unit Manager

About the Role

This position leads a diverse team of welding engineers, technicians, and specialists within the Welding Engineering department, ensuring alignment with company and customer objectives related to the fabrication of NOG components. The role is responsible for managing staffing, welding processes, quality, safety, schedule, and cost to achieve high-quality weld fabrication. This supervisory role requires collaboration across departments to optimize weld process efficiency, reduce defects, and support future welding technology initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead a diverse group of welding engineers, technicians, and other specialists to achieve company and customer commitments related to NOG component fabrication.
• Ensure the Welding Engineering unit aligns with company objectives regarding development, staffing, execution, and quality of weld processes and operations, including safety, quality, schedule, and cost.
• Coordinate and control welding engineers’ job functions to provide uniform, coordinated direction for short and long-range company goals.
• Manage staffing levels to support administrative and shop management needs, including personnel proposal, requisitioning, interviewing, and hiring.
• Lead efforts to ensure welding equipment and cells operate safely, free of injury.
• Review engineering drawings to ensure economic fabrication of the highest quality.
• Pre-plan future needs for equipment, weld development, qualifications, training, execution, testing, and other aspects of the weld process.
• Provide technical welding engineering support for shop welding surveillance across all welding processes.
• Collaborate with other departments to identify funding needs, constraints, and equipment/parameter problems to ensure timely completion of weld processes.
• Define weld process capability, robustness, and limitations to establish expectations for efficient weld deposition and first-time quality.
• Decrease weld and associated non-weld repair rates through active and collaborative management.
• Specify welding processes and procedures through preparation of weld data sheets in accordance with contract requirements.
• Initiate welding procedure qualifications to support contract requirements.
• Evaluate welding performance through analysis of the Weld Defect Report and initiate corrective actions considering economic, schedule, and quality impacts.
• Resolve shop welding and metallurgical problems while maintaining contractual obligations and corporate commitments.
• Identify areas for improving overall weld operation efficiency through collaboration on equipment, setup, personnel, training, and process capabilities.
• Provide technical justification for Degradation of Specification Reports (DSRs) and Repair Approval Requests (RARs).
• Identify and resolve risks associated with contracts and shop operations related to welding.
• Coordinate and support proposal activities to ensure all aspects of safety, quality, schedule, and cost are achievable, including gap analysis and risk guidance.
• Organize and support preparation of technical weld-related comments for proposal documents.
• Participate in customer negotiations to facilitate fair and equitable solutions ensuring schedule, technical, and price commitments.
• Establish, analyze, and negotiate programs or technical changes resulting from customer inquiries or internal recommendations.
• Determine weld wire needs, quantities, and special qualification requirements for proposals and NOG contracts.
• Negotiate welding-related technical requirements during the proposal stage and throughout the contract term.
• Resolve customer concerns regarding procedure qualifications and weld data sheets.
• Initiate actions for fabrication and testing of welding procedure qualifications.
• Interpret requirements of NAVSEA 250-1500-1, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and customer specifications to ensure compliance.
• Participate in planning and evaluating welding research and development for future program initiatives and manage customer workscopes related to future welding technology.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science Degree preferred in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or other engineering field, with proven leadership and management experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in the pressure vessel field or equivalent training in heavy equipment or construction.
• Ability to obtain government security clearance.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.

Pay

The base salary range for this position in Ohio (US-OH) is expected to be between $93,000 and $120,000 per year. The base salary offered may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. The total compensation package may also include an annual cash incentive and a full range of medical, retirement, and other benefits.
