About the role
The Welding Engineer will provide central office and field support to Projects Engineering, existing facilities operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Responsibilities include field walkdowns, supplier discussions, drawing reviews, design participation from scope definition through detailed design, and writing welding requirements for procurement documents. The role involves solving problems in designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes, training site personnel on welding requirements and compliance, and reviewing design output for welding technical data and code compliance.
Responsibilities
- Perform field walkdowns, presentations, supplier discussions, and drawing/document reviews.
- Participate in design activities ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, to preliminary/detailed designs.
- Write welding requirements for procurement documents and develop welding, brazing, and bonding procedures in compliance with applicable codes.
- Solve problems related to designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes.
- Train site personnel from engineering, maintenance, and construction on welding requirements, criteria, and compliance documents.
- Review design output documents for welding technical data and compliance with national codes, standards, and company procedures.
- Draft and assist in the execution of Installation Change Requests (ICRs), Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), and retraining as needed.
- Evaluate bid proposals for technical compliance of welding submittals and review supplier submittals.
- Travel to conduct supplier surveillances to ensure compliance with contractually specified welding requirements.
- Perform field activities supporting on-site and off-site organizations, including oversight of welding, brazing, bonding, and non-destructive examination activities.
- Conduct off-site supplier visits and audits.
- Maintain oversight and responsibility of Filler Material (Rod) Rooms.
- Review on-site work packages involving welding to ensure design output completeness and correctness, and establish hold points for fabrication and inspection.
- Generate Weld Inspection Records (WIRs), associated documents, and weld maps; track alterations and perform random in-process oversight of on-site welding activities.
- Review all completed Welding Inspection Records for completeness and correctness before final closeout.
- Assist in processing non-conformances and generate supplemental weld instructions including repair operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an ABET-accredited program in the U.S. or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or ABET-documented substantially equivalent programs.
- OR Master’s in Engineering/Physical Science.
- OR PhD in Engineering/Physical Science (advanced degrees require a technical undergraduate degree).
- Minimum GPA requirements:
- 3.0/4.0 cumulative for Bachelor’s degree.
- 3.3/4.0 cumulative for Master’s degree.
- 3.5/4.0 cumulative for PhD.
- Applicants must meet DOE O 426.2A requirements (Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related experience, and 1 year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment; newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties impacting the safety basis of nuclear facilities until requirements are met.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. degree with Welding Engineering/Welding Engineering Technology concentration from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a welding engineer in fabrication, manufacturing, utility, shipyard, or operating environment.
- Experience working as a welding engineer under an NQA-1 quality system.
- American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector certification or ability to attain within one year of hire.
- Ability to work in project and construction team environments, follow procedures, and work within rigorous processes.
- Ability to estimate, plan, and track progress for preparation of discipline deliverables.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
Skills
- Extensive technical knowledge of AWS A2.4, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX welding codes.
- Knowledge and hands-on application in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW processes, including weld size calculations.
- Knowledge of autogenous weld processes for stainless steel tube for high vacuum applications.
- Knowledge of manual and automatic GTAW welding of stainless steel for high vacuum applications.
