Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Welding Engineer to develop, validate and optimize welding processes for production equipment and automation cells. The role focuses on defining weld paths and parameter sets, programming and commissioning welding systems (GMAW, GTAW, laser, etc.), troubleshooting shop-floor issues, and integrating equipment to meet quality, safety and productivity targets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and qualify welding procedures (WPS) and parameter sets for GMAW, GTAW, laser welding and other processes.
  • Create and optimize weld paths and robot programs for automated welding cells; collaborate with integrators during programming and configuration.
  • Commission new welding equipment and automation cells; perform process validation, first-article builds and capability studies.
  • Troubleshoot welding processes, equipment faults and production defects; drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions on the shop floor.
  • Integrate welding equipment with PLCs, vision systems and factory automation; coordinate with controls and systems engineers.
  • Work with metallurgy and materials engineering to select consumables, control heat input and mitigate distortion and metallurgical issues.
  • Define inspection and NDT requirements, support quality teams with weld acceptance criteria and documentation.
  • Maintain process documentation, as-built configurations and change control for welding parameters and programs.
  • Train operators and technicians on welding procedures, equipment use, safety and shop-floor best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cycle time, rework and cost while improving weld quality and throughput.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Metallurgy or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years experience in welding process development, ideally in manufacturing or automation environments.
  • Hands-on experience with automated welding cells, robot programming and equipment integration (robot brands and offline programming tools a plus).
  • Proven experience with GMAW, GTAW and laser welding processes and developing WPS and parameter sets.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across process, equipment and PLC/controls interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of metallurgy, heat-affected zones, distortion control and appropriate consumable selection.
  • Experience with commissioning, process validation, first-article inspection and capability studies.
  • Familiarity with shop-floor processes, configuration management and change control for welding programs.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes/standards (AWS, ASME, ISO) and NDT methods.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; able to train technicians and support production teams.
  • Certification such as Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer is desirable.
