Welding and Inspection Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 2/3)

About the Role

This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations Group, J-2, is seeking a talented welder to join its Vessel Operations Team. Welding operations support the refurbishment of J-Division's confinement vessel systems used throughout the DOE Complex in hydrodynamic tests. The selected candidate will become qualified for weld repair of HSLA-100 confinement vessels, including gaining inspection experience and CWI certifications to support the team's efforts and production vessel team with site visits to fabrication vendors. Candidates will also be required to qualify as crane and forklift operators as well as radiological and beryllium workers.

Responsibilities

• Perform welding operations using SMAW, GTAW, and/or GMAW for the refurbishment of confinement vessel systems.
• Gain qualification for weld repair of HSLA-100 confinement vessels.
• Acquire inspection experience and CWI certifications.
• Support production vessel team with site visits to fabrication vendors.
• Operate cranes and forklifts safely and efficiently.
• Work in radiological and beryllium environments following safety protocols.
• Read and interpret shop drawings, layouts, and related specifications.
• Install, test, repair, and maintain equipment or systems.
• Follow written or verbal instructions and operational procedures.

Requirements

Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($54,900-$84,300)

• Basic experience in SMAW, GTAW, and/or GMAW.
• Some experience working with mechanical assemblies and fabrication processes, including reading and working to shop drawings.
• Basic understanding of standard shop equipment and tools, including knowledge of proper tool usage and operational hazards.
• Ability to read and understand written or verbal instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.
• Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance.

Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($66,100-$103,600)

In addition to the requirements of the Engineered Systems Tec Level 2, qualification at the higher level requires:

• Demonstrated experience in SMAW, GTAW, and/or GMAW.
• Demonstrated experience working with mechanical assemblies and fabrication processes, including proficiency in reading and working to shop drawings.
• Demonstrated proficiency in standard shop equipment and tools, including knowledge of proper tool usage and operational hazards.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Qualifications

Education/Experience at Lower Level (Tec 2)

High school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at Higher Level (Tec 3)

Associate's Degree in a related field and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Skills

• Experience in NDE methods such as magnetic particle, liquid penetrants, and visual inspections.
• Welding certifications or previous certifications in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW.
• Experience working in hazardous operations, including radiological contamination areas, confined spaces, and usage of PPE (personal protective equipment).
• Heavy equipment experience, such as forklift usage and overhead cranes.

• Engineered Systems Tec 2: $54,900 - $84,300
• Engineered Systems Tec 3: $66,100 - $103,600

Location

The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

This position requires a Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required.
