About the role

The Welder-Fabricator will perform hands-on metal fabrication and welding to support an R&D production campus, while also managing inventory control, shipping and receiving. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in the shop and keeping operations running smoothly.

Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role is fabrication and welding, including:

• Performing welding using one or more processes (MIG, TIG, and/or stick) on steel, aluminum, and other materials per drawings, work instructions, and weld specifications.
• Fabricating, assembling, and modifying metal parts, fixtures, brackets, and structures to support production and R&D needs.
• Reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, weld symbols, and shop sketches.
• Operating fabrication equipment including grinders, cut-off saws, drill presses, band saws, plasma/oxy-fuel cutters, and hand/power tools.
• Performing layout, measuring, cutting, grinding, and finishing of fabricated components to meet dimensional and quality requirements.
• Inspecting completed welds and fabricated parts for quality, fit, and compliance with specifications.
• Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe fabrication work area; performing routine maintenance on welding and fabrication equipment.

Additionally, this role will involve tooling and equipment maintenance, including maintaining the tool control program, calibration records, and coordinating calibration procedures and equipment maintenance issues.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have notable experience with construction/general fabrication and metal working capability, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding. They will also have experience leading small teams of people performing complex fabrication projects and working with contract machine shops and contractors.

• Notable experience with construction/general fabrication.
• Metal working capability including MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
• Experience leading small teams of people performing a complex fabrication project.
• Experience working with contract machine shops and or contractors for portions of fabrication projects.
• Forklift certified and notable experience performing high accuracy forklift movements for equipment positioning and fabrication projects.

Qualifications

Desired skills and abilities include:

• Welding certification(s) (e.g., AWS) or completion of a welding/fabrication training program.
• Experience with sheet metal fabrication, structural fabrication, or precision component work.
• HAZWOPER 40-hour certification.
• Formal prior Hazardous Shippers Certification or training.
• Prior commercial or military hazardous transportation and shipping experience a plus.
• Commercial Driver's License with Hazmat endorsement.

Physical Requirements

This role requires:

• Prolonged periods standing, bending, and working in a fabrication/shop environment.
• Ability to wear required PPE (welding helmet, gloves, respirator, etc.) for extended periods.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
• Some periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer for inventory and recordkeeping tasks.
