Welder - 1st shift

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Welding Lead, the Welder position is responsible for fitting and joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques in accordance with product specifications and production schedules. The Welder works in coordination with the Shift Supervisor and senior management to ensure that the entire customer product is fit and welded to specifications and meets outlined requirements. Consistent production of quality UT‑passable welds is critical, and the Welder is expected to maintain production levels as determined by the Production Supervisor.

MICA Steelworks, Rhome, Texas

Schedule

Current shifts: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM with Saturday as needed. Expected hours: 40–55 per week; 8‑12 hour shifts; day shift; weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (preferred: high school or equivalent)
• 1–2 years welding experience (required)
• Passing 2G test, T‑Joint test, and Carbon Air Arc test results
• Overhead and jib crane experience
• Knowledge of welding concepts, symbols, diagrams, and blueprint reading
• Ability to use welding equipment (torches, torch tips, Air Arc, flux‑core and metal‑core wire)
• Ability to use temperature sticks, welding fillet gauges, and other hand tools
• Ability to work in extreme temperatures and lift/move up to 40 lb
• Willingness to work additional hours and cross‑train on other tasks

Responsibilities

• Perform welding duties using a wire welder
• Weld steel components according to layouts, engineering drawings, work orders, or verbal instructions
• Weld in various positions (flat and horizontal)
• Set up, lay out work using jigs/fixtures or hand layouts to fabricate parts or rework finished products
• Collaborate with fitters to fabricate or weld multi‑component parts
• Operate forklifts, hoists, hand power tools, slings, grinders, cutting torch, and related equipment
• Inspect and correct welds to meet product specifications
• Examine work pieces for defects and measure with straightedges or templates
• Perform job‑specific procedures such as clamping, tack‑welding, heat bending, grinding, or bolting
• Read and follow job order specifications, engineering drawings, and work orders
• Maintain equipment functionality and quality, ensuring UT‑passable welds
• Maintain production levels as determined by supervisor
• Demonstrate a positive attitude, teamwork, and adaptability
• Operate equipment safely and follow OSHA‑required PPE guidelines
• Perform additional tasks as assigned

Working Conditions

• Full‑time shop environment with exposure to extreme temperatures
• No travel requirements
• Standing 8‑10 hours per day, up to 6 days a week
• Physical demands: good vision, hearing, smell, balance; frequent lifting/moving up to 40 lb; ability to stand, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs/ladders
• Required OSHA‑approved PPE, including welding hood

Continuing Education Requirements

Employee is expected to participate in appropriate continuing education as requested or required by the immediate supervisor and must attend mandatory education programs.
