Unit Description

The Emergency Center at Spartanburg Medical Center is a 75-bed unit located on the first floor next to the Pavilion. Services include Behavioral Health, Women's Center, Chest Pain, Intermediate Care, Major Care, Fast Track, and Level I Trauma Care. The main critical care area has a patient-to-nurse ratio of 4:1, and the intermediate care area has a ratio of 5:1.

Position Summary

The Acute Care Registered Nurse (RN) provides inpatient nursing care to patients in compliance with the SC Nurse Practice Act and organizational protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. The RN demonstrates clinical competency utilizing evidence-based practices and research in all areas of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and outcomes. The RN demonstrates thorough knowledge of therapeutic patient care, patient advocacy, clinical pathways/care maps, team dynamics, and hospital systems, serving as a resource for support associates. The RN collaborates with leadership in developing and implementing the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's culture, Mission, Vision, and Values. Associates are encouraged to engage and support community involvement.

Requirements

• Graduate of an approved/accredited School of Nursing
• Current RN licensure in the State of South Carolina or Compact State
• BLS certification (may secure post-hire)
• Novice to expert nurse experience

Preferred Requirements

• One year of recent RN experience within the past 5 years

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency utilizing electronic health records
• Documents all aspects of patient care, following established charting procedures to show patient progress or changes in condition
• Adheres to system required standards of behavior and proper chain of command
• Meets continuing education requirements, ensures compliance with clinical expectations, and regulatory agency requirements (DNV, DHEC, CMS)
• Effectively communicates with patients, families, providers, and hospital associates
• Knowledgeable in the use of and response to Facility Alert, Medical Alert, and Medical Emergency Systems
• Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient/family
• Provides a safe patient care environment
• Collaborates with patients, families, and healthcare team members to determine patient priorities and treatments
• Coordinates, provides, and directs patient teaching activities
• Initiates and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance outcomes
• Seeks assistance in completing nursing interventions to ensure positive patient outcomes
• Demonstrates competencies for new equipment, procedures, and annual competency validation
• Successfully completes hospital and unit-based orientation programs and annual competencies
• Formulates a plan for personal professional growth
• Recommends the need to develop or revise policies and procedures
• Serves on unit-based committees as assigned
• Prioritizes nursing interventions for an assigned group of patients
• Critically assesses patients' medical history, admitting diagnosis, physician orders, nursing history, performs physical assessments, evaluates diagnostic data, and interviews patients and families to determine needs
• Properly assesses and prioritizes multiple patients according to severity of illness, injury, or needs
• Provides quality patient care in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Professionally interacts and communicates with patients from diverse backgrounds and varying educational levels, including those who may be confused, irrational, agitated, or uncooperative
• Utilizes nursing standards and protocols to manage and stabilize emergencies until provider responds
• Demonstrates knowledge of professional nursing practice and theory
• Ensures continuity of care through effective decision-making resulting in quality patient care
