Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures that govern the nursing service department.
- Maintain current reference material at nurses’ stations.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with the procedures in the manual.
- Make reports and recommendations to the Director as necessary.
- Review and update department policies and procedures periodically.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with job descriptions.
- Participate in the quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Prepare and attend facility surveys as requested.
- Review and update resident discharge plans.
- Plan the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
- Meet with nursing staff to plan services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
- Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
- Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
- Ensure a sufficient number of licensed nurses, nursing assistants, and nurse aides are available.
- Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
- Enroll nursing assistants in or have them graduate from approved training programs.
- Supervise nursing service personnel to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Monitor absenteeism and report problem areas to the Director.
- Ensure that all personnel follow established policies and procedures.
- Report occupational exposures and incidents of fraud to the Administrator.
- Ensure that computer workstations are logged off or protected as per facility policy.
Committee Functions
- Attend various facility committee meetings as required.
- Prepare and present written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee(s).
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms for them.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Escort physicians during rounds.
- Inform the Director about delayed physician visits.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians to plan care.
- Notify the Director and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
- Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, nursing assistants, and trainees.
- Evaluate nurses’ notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions.
- Inform family members of resident deaths and arrange funerals.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan and supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards.
- Identify and evaluate job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
