About the Role

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all structures, including movable bridges, fixed bridges, culverts, overhead sign structures, high mast lighting, and bridge fender systems, in accordance with contract standards and supervisor directives.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair highway structures, including concrete, structural steel, welding, expansion joints, carpentry, and painting.
• Set up and remove Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T.) control devices such as cones, message/arrow boards, and temporary signage to ensure safe traffic flow.
• Work from heights using bucket trucks, snooper trucks, scaffolding, ladders, and aerial platform lifts.
• Repair and maintain bridge and culvert slopes, berms, drains, and other related features using shovels, power tools, and equipment.
• Control vegetation growth and appearance using lawn mowers, trimmers, chemical sprayers, and other methods.
• Maintain bridge fender systems, including navigational signs, lighting, and structural elements, while working in and around water and from boats.
• Transport crew and equipment to work sites using large trucks and specialized motor vehicles and trailers.
• Participate in emergency response rotations, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Perform all other assigned duties.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (required).
• One year of work experience in construction, maintenance, and repair (preferred).
• Previous experience leading a crew.
• CDL, DOT certifications, electrical, and welding certifications (highly desirable).
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (required).

• Ability to understand written, oral, or diagram-based instructions.
• Skill in reading and interpreting safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Work Conditions & Physical Demands

• 24-hour availability for emergency response due to accidents or bridge malfunctions.
• Regularly required to stand, sit, walk on varied surfaces, use hands and fingers, handle objects, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and communicate effectively.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
• Proficiency in using manual and powered tools, including pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric equipment.
• Visual abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
• Occasional exposure to wet/humid conditions, high or precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and moderate to high noise levels.
• Ability to work in tight spaces, in and around water, and from boats.
• Required use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate for the job.
