Responsibilities
- Responsible for the overall safe and efficient operation of the Life Support department.
- Operate and maintain all related equipment and chemical processes.
- Interview, coach and discipline Associates as needed with the Facility Maintenance Manager.
- Aid in the preparation of the annual budget under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and the Facility Maintenance Manager.
- Purchase new materials and supplies for the department.
- Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and Facility Maintenance Manager, act as Project Manager for the design of new exhibits.
- Communicate needs and problems to the Director of Maintenance, Director of Animal Care and Veterinarian Department.
- Oversee the department’s safety program and enforce safety policies and procedures.
- Serve as a member of the Animal Husbandry Committee and the Animal Welfare Committee to review park compliance with legislation.
- Serve as Chairman of the Dive Control Board; work with the DSO to ensure safe dive operations.
- Interface with regulatory agencies and accrediting organizations to maintain all standards accordingly.
- Work in concert with Facility Maintenance Manager to ensure all facilities are compliant with both regulatory and accrediting organization as appropriate.
- Develop, implement and enforce all departmental policies as needed; follow and enforce all policies of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
Qualifications
- 2-5 years previous experience as a Life Support Lead with an AZA or ZAA accredited institution is preferred or equivalent work experience.
- AALSO Life Support Operator or AALSO Water Quality Certification Preferred.
- Must be proficient managing closed loop filtration systems for marine mammals and fish.
- Must be proficient troubleshooting, repairing and upgrading mechanical equipment associated with life support systems (Pumps, motors, ozone, automation, etc.).
- Must have a thorough working knowledge of water chemistry, as it applies to a wide variety of systems including marine mammal, fish and avian systems.
- Open water diving certificate preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Prior experience in project management required.
- Must be able to work in all types of weather both indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to deal effectively with other professionals and governmental agencies.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Must be a strong swimmer and willing to work in and around cold saltwater as needed.
- Must possess good corrected/uncorrected eyesight.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Applications.
