About the role

The Water Meter Tech I position involves installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing water meters ranging from ¾” to 6”. This role also includes assisting with customer concerns, meter investigations, and general water distribution system maintenance. The position requires operating meter test benches, maintaining precise records, and performing inspections of water meter vaults, meter pits, service lines, and sewer service installs.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, deploys, programs, troubleshoots, and maintains the water AMI system, including endpoints and related communication infrastructure.
  • Provides professional customer service by responding to water-related inquiries, explaining usage and billing information, and assisting with meter accuracy, leak concerns, and other water service issues.
  • Participates in the after-hours duty rotation, playing a key role in keeping the City’s water system running smoothly.
  • Maintains and repairs water meter appurtenances, assists with installation and deployment of water AMI systems, and supports accurate meter data collection and transmission.
  • Assists with deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of water AMI endpoints and communication devices.
  • Performs routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs on assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Provides feedback and information to supervisor to support budget development, capital planning, and special projects related to water distribution and metering infrastructure.
  • May assist with the cross-connection control program by surveying single-family residences for potential cross-connections, documenting findings electronically, and supporting compliance with applicable state and local regulations.

Requirements

Required: High School Diploma/GED. 1 year of experience in water utilities, irrigation systems, underground utility installation, or a related field is required. Preferred: Familiarity with water distribution systems, basic plumbing principles, meter installation, and safe excavation practices. Preferred: Experience working around buried utilities and interacting with customers in a service-oriented environment. Preferred: Experience using hand tools, basic computer systems, electronic work order programs, and the ability to learn AMI technology, GIS mapping, and meter data collection systems.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must acquire Colorado Class I Water Distribution Certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must acquire Confined Space training/certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must acquire Trenching and Excavating training/certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Preferred: Cross Connection Control Tester Certification.
  • Preferred: Colorado Class 1 Collections Operator Certificate.

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of water meters, taps, meter installations, and basic plumbing.
  • Intermediate proficiency in the use of electronic work order management systems, digital mapping applications, and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) equipment and related field technology.
  • Ability to become familiar with City codes and development standards with respect to tap and meter installations.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with customers and co-workers.
  • Proficient in operating mobile communication devices, including smartphones, two-way radios, and utility-specific applications.
  • Good customer service skills by filling out work orders with all required information and effectively dealing with angry or emotional customers.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of pipeline construction and safety preferred.
  • Knowledge of water distribution systems, construction and maintenance preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Frequent: Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects.
  • Frequent: Light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks.
  • Frequent: Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions.
  • Frequent: Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
  • Frequent: Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.

Additional Working Demands / Conditions

  • Subject to call-back work and must be capable of responding to emergency situations upon short notice.
  • Mandatory duty rotation will include after-hours and weekend work, and incumbent must be able to make competent decisions while on duty.
  • May be required to be available by cellular phone 7 days a week.
  • Must be able to respond within 30-minutes to the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and U.S. Highway 34.
  • Continuous Floating Holiday - This position may work evenings, weekends, and holidays. As a result, the position is eligible for Continuous Floating Holiday.

Pay and Schedule

The salary range for this position is $25.42 - $34.32 per hour with a hiring range of $25.42 - $29.87, depending on qualifications and experience. This opportunity will be available to applicants until filled.
