Water Exercise Instructor, North Side YMCA

Reports to: Healthy Living Director • Non-Exempt

About the role

Provide leadership to all instructional water exercise classes while maintaining the safety of all program participants.

Responsibilities

• Stay current in CPR, AED, O₂, and First Aid (renewed annually).
• Remain mentally alert to dangerous situations to assure participant safety.
• Demonstrate exercises using both arms and legs and assist the lifeguard in emergencies.
• Project voice, see, and hear across distances; move in and around the swimming pool.
• Stand for extended periods and demonstrate all exercises.
• Handle irate or demanding individuals professionally.
• Collaborate with supervisor to develop safe, challenging water exercise classes.
• Follow YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City policies and guidelines.
• Promote water exercise classes to members, participants, and the public.
• Keep certifications current and teach all assigned classes.
• Notify supervisor if unable to teach and arrange a substitute.
• Assist lifeguard during emergencies.
• Set up and return all class equipment (barbells, tape player, tapes, floatation belts, etc.).
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Complete Bloodborne Pathogens, Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse Prevention, Slips Trips and Falls, and Safe Lifting training within 30 days of hire and renew annually.
• Develop meaningful relationships with members, donors, and volunteers.

Requirements

• Certified in CPR, AED, O₂, and First Aid (training provided if needed).
• 18 years or older with technical ability in water fitness.
• Acquire YMCA Water Exercise Instructor or nationally recognized certification, plus YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant certification within six months of employment.
• Cooperative spirit committed to character development (caring, honesty, respect, responsibility).
• Ability to relate positively to pool patrons.
• Teach classes aligned with YMCA Water Exercise Program objectives and mission.

Pay

Starting at $15.00 per hour.
