WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

About the role

The City of Canandaigua, located in Ontario County in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Mechanic. Appointment will be made on a provisional basis, with permanent appointment following successful qualification in the Civil Service Examination, which will be scheduled at a later date.

Responsibilities

• Perform or lead skilled maintenance and repairs to pumps, valves, chlorinators, chemical feed and mixing machines, and other wastewater treatment plant equipment.
• Conduct complex preventative maintenance, including cleaning screens, lubricating filter valve shafts, greasing and oiling motors, and inspecting and replacing worn parts.
• Lead semi-skilled maintenance tasks involving plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and related work.
• Repair and maintain pumping stations and reservoir equipment.
• Operate sludge trucks for transporting materials from the treatment plant to the landfill.
• Assist in training personnel in plant operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Maintain records and reports of work performed, time expended, and materials used for the Chief Sewage Treatment Plant Operator.

Requirements

• One year of experience in the repair and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities on a skilled level; or
• Two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of hydraulic, mechanical, or electrical equipment on a skilled level.

Skills

• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and procedures used in the repair and maintenance of large-scale hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
• Ability to make skilled repairs to a variety of wastewater treatment plant machinery and equipment.
• Skill in operating manual and power tools.
• Ability to instruct others and work from plans and sketches.
• Mechanical aptitude and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Special Requirements

• Possession of an appropriate New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment, and maintenance of such license throughout employment.
