About the role
This position is open for external candidates only to apply. This position will be filled at either the Waste Management Coordinator 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. This position may require shift work.
Responsibilities
- Oversight of proper storage, handling, characterization, packaging, and transportation of various waste materials, including hazardous, radioactive, and mixed waste, within a laboratory or high-hazard facility.
- Closely work with scientists, engineers, and regulatory agencies to maintain compliance with environmental and safety regulations while supporting groundbreaking discoveries.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations through effective communication and collaboration with regulatory bodies.
- Mentor staff and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive innovation in waste management strategies.
Requirements
- Understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, security, environment and quality objectives and requirements.
- Basic knowledge of and experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes.
- Practical work experience with a laboratory or high hazard facility/environment that generated multiple waste types.
- Basic skill to communicate elements of waste management to technical and non-technical personnel, interact, and work with internal customers as well as with Federal, State, and local agencies.
- Basic knowledge or training per DOT 49 CFR as a Basic Hazardous Materials Shipper and Basic Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Hazardous Materials Shipper and Advanced Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Mixed Waste Shipper.
- Knowledge of LANL's organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities.
- Experience and knowledge of LANL's waste management policies, practices, and procedures.
- Current or previous qualification as a waste professional in a Department of Energy facility.
- Chemical lab packing experience.
Qualifications
- Minimum: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Higher Level: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Pay
$72,800 - $115,400 for Waste Management Coordinator 1; $87,800 - $143,000 for Waste Management Coordinator 2.
Schedule
Regular work schedule with occasional shift work.
