About the role
The Warehouse Team Leader oversees daily warehouse operations within a busy marine terminal, ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient handling of breakbulk and project cargo moving through vessel, rail, truck, and warehouse operations.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise warehouse personnel, including foremen, forklift operators, clerks, and general laborers, to ensure safe and efficient daily operations.
- Cook off the receiving, storage, staging, inventory control, and shipping of breakbulk, project cargo, and other industrial materials.
- Plan and assign daily work activities to maximize labor utilization, equipment availability, and operational efficiency.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, reinforce safe work practices, and ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and terminal operating procedures.
- Maintain warehouse productivity, inventory accuracy, and cargo movement while ensuring customer deadlines and service expectations are met.
- Utilize Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to manage inventory transactions, track cargo movements, and maintain accurate operational records.
- Apply inventory control principles, including FIFO, LIFO, cycle counts, and inventory reconciliation, to maintain accurate stock levels.
- Identify operational challenges, resolve shift-level issues, and communicate workflow updates with terminal operations, transportation, maintenance, and customer service teams.
- Coach, train, and mentor employees to improve performance, operational knowledge, and workplace safety while fostering a collaborative team environment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying process improvements, and assisting with special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of three years of warehouse, logistics, terminal operations, or distribution center experience, including previous supervisory or team leadership responsibilities.
- Experience handling breakbulk cargo, project cargo, steel products, or heavy industrial materials is strongly preferred.
- Forklift certification or the ability to obtain certification.
- Experience using Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), inventory management software, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory control practices, cargo staging, shipping, receiving, and material handling.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced operational environment.
- Working knowledge of Lean warehousing, continuous improvement methodologies, and productivity measurement is preferred.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts to support terminal operations.
