About the role

Warehouse Generalists at the full-performance level work independently under general supervision and perform work in one or more work units. They are expected to develop proficiency in their duties and complete Sponsor-specific training to safely and effectively operate necessary equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate material handling equipment such as:
    • Gas/diesel/electric-powered forklifts (1,000 to 50,000 lbs. capacity)
    • Pallet jacks and hand trucks
    • Automatic or manual shrink wrap machines
    • Warehouse scales
    • Banding and strapping equipment
    • Wheeled carts and cages, J-bars
    • Dock and lift gate equipment
    • Packing tape dispensers
  • Assist with office moves and relocations, including:
    • Manual lifting and lowering of boxes, totes, bins, and furniture
    • Wrapping furniture and other items using furniture pads or stretch wrap
    • Team lifts of safes and other heavy materials onto dollies or skids
  • Use manual and/or electric hand tools for tasks such as:
    • Mounting or dismounting white boards, pictures, and electronic equipment
    • Measuring and cutting wood for crate assembly
  • Perform receiving and distribution functions, including:
    • Pick-up and delivery of materials
    • Validation of material contents against packing lists and manifests
    • Inspection of received material for damage
    • Loading and unloading material to/from trucks, trailers, vans, and other vehicles
    • Preparation of shipping documentation and labeling
  • Execute packing and crating functions, including:
    • Following policies and procedures for packing and crating materials
    • Seeking guidance for packing hazardous materials
    • Performing packing steps for standard and non-standard items
    • Determining appropriate packing materials
    • Measuring and cutting wood for custom crating
    • Constructing custom crates, blocking, and bracing materials
    • Weighing, cubing, banding, and applying burlap to packages
    • Using Instapak and other packing materials
    • Preparing documentation for HAZMAT packages
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment (e.g., oiling, cleaning, changing filters).
  • Process documents and manifests, readying them for distribution.
  • Receive, sort, and package materials for daily delivery, ensuring proper marking.
  • Ensure safe and secure transport of documents/materials within Agency facilities and other Government locations in the Washington metropolitan area.
  • Distribute materials, collecting authorized signatures upon delivery.
  • Organize daily delivery routes for efficiency and timeliness, including alternative routes.
  • Complete entries into a tracking database and scan materials into the document control system.
  • Scan signed receipts to verify delivery and accountability transfer.
  • Serve as a customer service representative to resolve delivery issues (e.g., delays).
  • Maintain contact with recipients regarding problem resolution and escalate issues as needed.
  • Coordinate daily activities of team members, including duty lists and workload distribution.
  • Receive delivery requests via phone, email, or in-person and prepare manifests.
  • Communicate delivery status and route changes, updating cleared recipient lists.
  • Assist in balancing workload distribution among couriers and monitoring hours worked.
  • Perform other ad hoc warehouse tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Active Top Secret/SCI US Government clearance with polygraph (US Citizenship required).
  • At least one (1) year of warehouseman-type work in a warehouse environment.
  • Clean driving record:
    • Point accumulation not exceeding minus four (-4) points
    • Zero driving suspensions or revocations
    • Zero serious motor vehicle violations (e.g., DUI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident)
    • No assignment to alcohol safety action programs or driver alcohol rehabilitation programs
    • No assignment to driver improvement programs
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Forklift training within 30 days of start (provided by Sponsor).

Skills

  • Working knowledge of policies and regulations for storage, packing, shipping, and handling materials (including specialized materials).
  • Diplomacy and good judgment in interactions with security guards, police, and government officials.
  • Ability to learn Agency regulations, policies, and unique authorities.
  • Working knowledge of HAZMAT requirements and Working Capital Fund (WCF) procedures.
  • Understanding of security protocols related to warehouse operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of Washington, D.C. and surrounding routes.
  • Excellent driving skills and a good driving record.
  • Basic mathematical skills for measuring, weighing, and cubing materials.
  • Knowledge of power tools, machinery, and carpentry techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based computer applications.
  • Experience operating material handling equipment safely.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (frequent lifting up to 70 lbs).
  • Knowledge of industrial shredder operation.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills with minimal guidance.
  • Reading comprehension for manifests and documents.
  • Attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Flexibility to work well in a team environment.
  • Adaptability to follow correct delivery procedures.
  • Time management for handling multiple priorities.
  • Experience training other employees.

Work Environment

Work is performed in two environments:

  • A temperature-controlled warehouse with concrete floors, exposure to moving vehicles, fumes, noise, dust, and cramped spaces.
  • Driving a customer vehicle to and from sponsor and customer sites, including mailroom/office settings.

Work involves significant standing, driving, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 70 lbs). Frequent use of computer terminals and occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Pay

US: $30.00 - $36.00 hourly.
