About the role

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. We are one of the largest departments in Maryland with nearly 12,000 employees and a budget of more than $1 billion. In order to fulfill our mission of promoting safety, we have increased security at our institutions while leading the way in innovative restorative justice projects that will help offenders reintegrate into society upon release.

Position duties

• Plans, administers, coordinates and reviews the security, treatment and administrative programs of a correctional facility in the state of Maryland.
• Directs professional, technical, security, clerical, and other staff and subordinate managerial staff.
• Serves as the primary supervisor for the Assistant Warden, Correctional Security Chiefs, and other staff.
• Ensures audit compliance by adhering to policy.
• Works in a correctional facility and is exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
• One year of experience as an Assistant Warden or three years of experience as Facility Administrator or five years as a Security Chief.
• Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for one year of the required experience provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social science.
• Professional working fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, Korean, or any other language is a plus.

• The ideal candidate must be fluent in spoken and written English.
• The ideal candidate must effectively and respectfully communicate with diverse populations, providing services to individuals with different beliefs, behaviors, and interpersonal styles in confinement or community settings.

Selection process

• The assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position.
• All information concerning your qualifications must be submitted by the closing date.
• Successful candidates will be ranked as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified and placed on the eligible (employment) list for at least one year.
