Walking My Talk
I recently transitioned from Oracle after 14.5 years, starting my career at Sun Microsystems in 1998. My journey began as a university web master, working with Sun to administer the web server for ARD, Germany’s largest public television network. Back then, entire websites ran on single-processor, single-disk Netra i systems.
14.5 Years of Learning and Meeting Great People
During my time at Sun and Oracle, I had the privilege of learning about:
- UltraSPARC, Solaris, and system design
- Web protocols, standards, and Java
- Big systems, small systems, and large-scale clusters (for high availability and HPC)
- Batch scheduling, workstations, visualization, and 3D graphics
- Grid Computing, Web 2.0, blogging, and podcasting
- Cloud Computing, databases, WebLogic, ITIL, and Enterprise Architecture (TOGAF)
- Engineered Systems
I also had the opportunity to meet incredible people—engineers, sales teams, marketing professionals, managers, executives, and customers—who provided insights, inspiration, and new perspectives.
The Road Ahead
My next role will be IT-centric but very different. My focus remains the same: helping customers maximize the potential of exciting new technology.
The Blog
I’ll continue blogging about technology topics once I settle into my new role. In the meantime, I have plenty of ideas to share. I also run two other blogs:
- Paleosophie – A German blog about Paleo nutrition and lifestyle
- HELDENfunk – A podcast for German sysadmins, produced with friends
If you speak German, feel free to check them out.
