About the role

The Educational Interpreter performs sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in a variety of educational settings, including mainstream classrooms, small group instruction, and school-related activities. This role works under the direction of the Director of Special Education and collaborates with teachers, educational audiologists, and other support staff to ensure equal access to communication and curriculum.

Responsibilities

• Provide accurate sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpretation for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students during instructional time, school assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular events.
• Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and peers while maintaining the tone, register, and intent of the speaker or signer.
• Pre‑read and prepare materials for interpretation, including vocabulary lists, lesson plans, and visual aids, to ensure clarity and fluency.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to adapt and modify instructional materials to support student comprehension and participation.
• Monitor student understanding during interpreted activities and rephrase or clarify as needed without altering the academic content.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and educational information in compliance with FERPA and district policies.
• Participate in team meetings, IEP conferences, and staff development sessions as requested to support student success and program improvement.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher, or a valid Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) credential (NIC, CI/CT, or equivalent).
• Current certification in American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency at a level sufficient to meet district standards (assessed via interview/screening).
• Pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as required by state law and district policy.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
• Experience working with school‑aged children in an educational environment (minimum of one year preferred).

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture, communication modes (ASL, PSE, MCE), and the educational interpreting process.
• Ability to interpret a wide range of academic subjects, from elementary to high‑school level content, including math, science, literature, and social studies.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and families.
• Flexibility to adapt interpreting style to different student needs, language levels, and classroom dynamics.
• Physical ability to stand, sit, and move throughout the day to maintain visual access and optimal positioning for interpreting.

Skills

• Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) with excellent expressive and receptive skills.
• Strong voicing skills for clear, accurate voice‑to‑sign interpretation.
• Ability to simultaneously interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English with minimal lag.
• Skill in using educational technology, such as classroom audio‑distribution systems and video relay services.
• Organizational and time‑management skills to prepare materials and manage multiple assignments.
