VP, Software Engineering - Hybrid (Preferred, Raleigh or Jersey City) OR Remote
About the role
The Vice President, Software Engineering (Domain Owner) provides leadership in aligning technology development with business objectives across assigned platforms and technologies. This role is responsible for setting direction and guiding software engineering managers, database specialists, developers, and contract teams. The VP drives execution across multiple teams and agile phases to deliver against work plans, while establishing departmental priorities to ensure software development, maintenance, and innovation goals are met.
Responsibilities
- Own the strategic vision and roadmap for all products within scope, ensuring alignment with business strategy, enterprise transformation initiatives, and technology standards.
- Lead the delivery of high-quality, timely solutions, including new and enhanced systems and technologies.
- Oversee end-to-end technology functions, including:
- Solution architecture
- Software engineering
- Test automation
- Performance engineering
- DevSecOps
- Production support and service levels
- Partner with business stakeholders, IT leaders, and vendors to identify opportunities to leverage technology to improve customer experience and business processes.
- Develop business cases and financial analyses for new technologies, systems, and applications based on strategic priorities and resource availability.
- Define and enforce standards, policies, and best practices across software development, testing, and performance engineering.
- Continuously evaluate emerging technologies and industry trends to inform innovation and modernization efforts.
- Participate in vendor and strategic partner evaluations and manage ongoing relationships.
- Own and manage the department budget, including:
- P&L forecasting
- Operational and capital expenditures
- Contract negotiations
- Invoice processing
Requirements
Full lifecycle accountability across underwriting workflows — including submission, pricing, validation, issuance, and ongoing enhancements — with responsibility extending beyond initial delivery into continuous platform evolution.
Qualifications
- Strong stakeholder management and executive communication skills.
- Broad expertise in software development methodologies, processes, and best practices.
- Deep experience within specialty commercial insurance, including: Casualty, Workers’ Compensation, Construction, Energy, Large account business.
- Knowledge of test automation tools, frameworks, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of Agile development and applying it to drive business outcomes.
- Experience modernizing technology platforms to improve underwriting efficiency.
- Strategic thinker with strong decision-making and long-term planning capabilities.
- Proven ability to solve complex business and technology challenges.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and team development skills.
- Technical expertise including: Java (backend), Angular (frontend), AWS and Azure (scalable, high-availability environments), MS SQL.

Pay
$155,000 - $280,000/year Total individual compensation (base salary, short & long-term incentives) offered will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to geographic location, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications, talent availability & specialization as well as business needs. The above pay range may be modified in the future.
Schedule
Flexible schedule with a preference for candidates who can work remotely (ideally within proximity to an Arch office in the Northeast), with hybrid arrangements in Raleigh or Jersey City strongly preferred.
