About the Role

The VP of Family and Youth Development is a key member of the New Canaan YMCA’s management team, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. This role oversees four core areas: childcare and preschool programming, camp and school-age programming, inclusion and support programming, and sports and recreational programming for all ages. The VP ensures that the Y’s Youth and Family programming is inviting, engaging, inclusive, and fun while driving growth, innovation, and financial sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and supervision of high-quality, well-attended, and financially sustainable Youth and Family programming.
  • Lead and inspire teams to build, innovate, test, and expand the value and scope of programs.
  • Guide program Directors to develop initiatives that challenge, interest, and meet the developmental needs of participants.
  • Oversee camp and outdoor programs to ensure they operate effectively and deliver a high-quality, memorable experience for campers.
  • Strengthen family connections by developing programs that meet the needs and interests of families, fostering engagement and entertainment.
  • Ensure high-quality, nurturing childcare that supports age-appropriate social, emotional, and cognitive development.
  • Develop sports and movement-based programs for all ages, including clinics and day camps.
  • Prioritize safety in all programs, adhering to regulations, standards, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with other YMCA Directors and community partners, including schools, local government, and the Recreation Department.
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff and volunteers, setting goals, evaluating performance, and motivating teams.
  • Manage budgets, financial procedures, and business operations in alignment with YMCA policies.
  • Attend and report at Board of Directors and Committee meetings.
  • Demonstrate the YMCA’s Four Core Values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Support YMCA activities and special events as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Business, Sports Management, Recreational Management, or similar field preferred).
  • Four or more years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Direct service experience with youth and families; camp or outdoor program experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising five or more full-time exempt staff.
  • Ability to direct programs through staff supervision, budget development, monitoring, marketing, and public relations.
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.
  • Strong initiative, decision-making, and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to safety and compliance.
