VP, Coverage & Complex Claims
Chubb is seeking a Vice President to lead a team within our Coverage and Complex Claims Department. This role involves managing a sophisticated team of claims professionals handling a wide variety of Casualty (Personal Lines & Commercial Lines) claims with coverage issues, coverage litigation, and other complex claims, including Financial Lines (D&O, E&O, EPLI, Fidelity, Surety & Political Risk), Property (Personal Lines & Commercial), Worker’s Compensation, and Accident & Health.
About the role
The ideal candidate will lead and develop a team of claims professionals focused on resolving claims with complex coverage issues and coverage litigation, adhering to established best practices and authority limits. This role requires approximately 25% travel.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of 5-7 claims professionals directly handling and managing claims involving complex coverage issues, including investigation, analysis, and evaluation of coverage, liability, and damages.
- Handle coverage disputes, including litigation and arbitration initiated by or naming Chubb issuing companies.
- Formulate claims and litigation strategies, assign and manage outside counsel, and direct litigation efforts.
- Oversee discovery processes, ensure consistency in responses, and prepare company witnesses for deposition and trial testimony.
- Attend critical court proceedings, including mediation, settlement conferences, trials, and appeals.
- Provide guidance on coverage issues, disputes, and claim handling, including strategic direction and assignment of outside coverage counsel.
- Manage coverage counsel and litigation costs, collaborating with litigation and vendor management teams to enhance cost efficiency and the coverage counsel panel.
- Collaborate across disciplines and business units, including the office of general counsel, Brandywine (run-off) team, Bermuda claims team, and in-house coverage counsel team.
- Support actuarial and underwriting inquiries related to policy construction, claim trends, data analysis, and risk assessments.
- Engage in extensive communication with insureds, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, and auditors (both external and internal).
Requirements
- 15 or more years of experience as a lawyer and/or claim professional with specialized expertise in litigation management and handling complex coverage issues, high-exposure claims, and coverage litigation.
- A law degree is strongly preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered.
- Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal communication, and negotiation skills.
- Strong customer service skills and professionalism in working with clients and business partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a complex operating environment.
- Ability to work independently, identify issues, and assimilate learning materials from various sources.
- Experience in senior management reporting.
Pay
The pay range for this role is $161,700 to $234,300. The specific offer will depend on an applicant’s skills and other factors. This role may also be eligible for a discretionary annual incentive program.
