About the role

Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding way to give back to the community and a way to spend your time enriching the lives of others. Rose Garden volunteers participate at least twice per month in the following areas to help manage the beauty and integrity of the Rose Garden: Rose pruning, fertilizing, general weeding, and beetling. ALL supplies and training are provided on site.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the management of the Rose Garden by performing tasks such as rose pruning, fertilizing, general weeding, and beetling.
  • Work with District staff, fellow-volunteers, and other agencies or contractors to ensure the Rose Garden's health and appearance.
  • Adapt to changing priorities, weather events, and special work requests as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be ten (10) years old, depending on the specialty area.
  • Volunteers aged ten (10) to thirteen (15) must have a parent or guardian onsite while volunteering, unless serving in the Nature Teen Program for 14 and 15 year olds.
  • Experience in gardening, rose pruning, grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to follow workplace safety procedures and listen and follow directions/instructions from supervisory staff.
  • Awareness of the policies and goals of the Garden as presented during training.
  • Ability to learn and demonstrate maintenance and proper use of hand tools.
  • Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  • Ability to interact tactfully, clearly, concisely, and appropriately with District staff, fellow-volunteers, and other agencies or contractors.
