Volunteer: Resource Development Strategy and Revenue Diversification

About the role

This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections. The Arc of California needs to diversify its revenue streams to strengthen its long-term financial sustainability. Historically, the organization has relied primarily on chapter dues and institutional grants, and recent changes in grant funding have reinforced the need to develop a more diversified and resilient revenue model. The organization’s Board of Directors recently established a Resource Development Task Force to lead this effort.

Responsibilities

• Assess The Arc of California’s current revenue model and development capacity, including strengths, vulnerabilities, existing assets and potential gaps.
• Identify and prioritize revenue diversification opportunities, with rationale and preliminary feasibility considerations. Opportunities may include institutional philanthropy, individual giving, major gifts, corporate partnerships and sponsorships, earned revenue, and other mission-aligned funding strategies.
• Facilitate a 90-minute Resource Development Task Force kickoff meeting in October 2026 to review findings, engage Task Force members in strategic discussion, and establish initial revenue development priorities.
• Prepare a summary of findings, Task Force discussion and recommended priorities that can serve as the foundation for the organization’s next phase of resource development planning.

Deliverables

• Assessment of current revenue model and development capacity.
• Prioritized set of revenue diversification opportunities with rationale and preliminary feasibility considerations.
• Facilitation of 90-minute Task Force kickoff meeting.
• Summary of findings, discussion and recommended priorities.

Time commitment

• Participate in approximately two preparation meetings with key staff/leadership.
• Review relevant organizational and financial materials.
• Facilitate the 90-minute Task Force kickoff meeting.
• Estimated project period: September–October 2026.
