Position Summary

Gender Freedom Society is seeking Volunteer Prison Advocacy Support Specialists to assist with general prison advocacy work supporting incarcerated transgender and gender-diverse individuals. This volunteer role provides essential program support under the supervision of advocacy leadership and helps ensure our prison advocacy efforts are organized, ethical, and effective.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide general support for prison advocacy activities as assigned
  • Aid in preparing letters, summaries, and advocacy-related documentation
  • Conduct basic research on correctional policies and procedures
  • Organize and incoming information for review by senior advocates
  • Support internal case tracking and administrative workflows
  • Help compile timelines, summaries, and internal reports
  • Participate in required trainings related to confidentiality, safety, and advocacy practices
  • Follow all documentation, privacy, and escalation protocols

Role Boundaries

  • Volunteers do not independently contact correctional facilities or staff
  • Volunteers do not make case determinations or escalation decisions
  • Volunteers do not provide legal advice
  • All work is performed under supervision and within defined program guidelines

Qualifications

  • Interest in civil rights, prison advocacy, or LGBTQ+ justice
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to follow structured procedures and guidance
  • Reliability and attention to detail
  • Comfort working with sensitive subject matter
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Lived experience may be considered in place of formal education or professional experience
