Position Overview
Manager of Policy Advocacy
Gender Freedom Society is seeking a strategic, organized, and mission-driven Volunteer Manager of Policy Advocacy to lead and coordinate our policy research, analysis, and advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Management
- Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to Policy Researchers, Policy Analysts, and Policy Advocates.
- Cook up workflows, assign priorities, and ensure collaboration across policy roles.
- Facilitate regular team meetings to align research, analysis, and advocacy efforts.
- Support volunteer development through guidance, feedback, and skill-building.
- Strategic Policy Direction
- Develop and maintain short- and long-term policy advocacy strategies aligned with GFS’s mission.
- Identify priority policy areas affecting the transgender/GNC community at local, state, and national levels.
- Ensure research and advocacy efforts are proactive, responsive, and evidence-based.
- Oversight of Research & Analysis
- Review and approve policy briefs, research papers, talking points, and advocacy materials.
- Ensure accuracy, clarity, accessibility, and consistency across all policy outputs.
- Translate complex policy findings into strategic recommendations for organizational leadership.
- Advocacy Coordination
- Oversee the planning and execution of advocacy campaigns, legislative outreach, and public policy initiatives.
- Cook up messaging across advocates to ensure unified and effective communication.
- Support engagement with policymakers, coalitions, and partner organizations when appropriate.
- Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with executive leadership, communications teams, education programs, and grant teams.
- Provide policy updates and impact summaries for internal use, public communications, or reporting.
- Ensure advocacy efforts reflect lived experiences and community feedback.
- Making Progress
- Track legislative trends, emerging threats, and opportunities impacting transgender rights.
- Maintain high-level policy tracking and progress reports.
- Provide regular updates to organizational leadership on policy developments and advocacy outcomes.
Qualifications
- Strong commitment to social justice and advancing transgender and gender-nonconforming rights.
- Demonstrated understanding of policy issues affecting the transgender community, including healthcare, legal recognition, discrimination, and civil rights.
- Experience in advocacy leadership, policy coordination, nonprofit management, or related fields preferred.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage remote teams and coordinate complex, multi-role projects.
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and ability to navigate sensitive or high-impact policy issues.
- Experience working with volunteers is strongly preferred but not required.
