Volunteer: Data Privacy and Governance Memo

About the role

This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections. Evolving in Education is building an educator‑focused technology platform that uses structured data and AI‑assisted analysis. The organization needs high‑level guidance so its Board can understand and address privacy‑ and governance‑related questions about data collection, ownership, access, retention, security, sharing, and responsible use, including considerations arising from AI processing.

Responsibilities

• Produce a concise, board‑facing data privacy and governance memo that identifies the key privacy and data‑governance questions Evolving in Education needs to resolve, covering data collection, ownership, access, retention, security, sharing, responsible use, and AI processing.
• Highlight significant risks or areas requiring additional attention, with brief explanations of why each risk matters for Board decision‑making.
• Recommend practical safeguards and governance practices the Board can consider (policy approaches, roles and oversight, operational controls) that suit a small nonprofit technology platform.
• Identify areas where Evolving in Education should seek specialized legal, cybersecurity, or technical advice, specifying the type of specialist and the issue that requires that expertise.

Requirements

Professional experience in data privacy, data governance, information governance, or responsible data management, preferably with experience in nonprofit, education, technology, or AI‑related environments.
