Volunteer Advocate for Children (VAC)
About the role
The Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA) oversees the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program in Orange County. Volunteers are known as Volunteer Advocates for Children (VACs).
Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with GAL Program staff and Attorneys to ensure children are seen regularly (at minimum once per month)
- Ensure the children's needs are brought to the court’s attention
- Be a constant presence in the lives of the children served
Requirements
- Completed application
- Three references
- Interview with VAC Program Coordinator
- Attendance at training sessions
- Clearance of a Level II background check
Qualifications
VACs must be willing to commit to the long-term commitment of the program, which includes regular meetings with children and ongoing communication with GAL Program staff and Attorneys.
Skills
Strong interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to communicate effectively with children and adults are essential.

Pay
This is a volunteer opportunity only.
Schedule
VACs are expected to meet with children on a regular basis, typically once per month.
Benefits
VACs receive no compensation but may be eligible for reimbursement of travel expenses if approved by the program.
