The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines—including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT—provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. Student Health also offers basic radiology and clinical laboratory services, insurance consultation, and an on-site pharmacy, making it a comprehensive and convenient clinic dedicated to serving students.

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Manager, Clinical Nurses, Medical Director, or licensed medical care provider (physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner), the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides quality nursing care for all patients presenting at the Student Health Center. The LVN is responsible for essential functions, including patient-centered duties, managing supplies and equipment, completing nursing department duties, and other tasks delegated by the Clinical Nurse Manager or Medical Director.

The LVN maintains harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team; practices the standards of quality nursing care; adheres to the principles of infection control; responds appropriately in emergency situations; and performs the duties and responsibilities outlined.

Responsibilities

• Assist with Women’s Health Clinic, general clinic, and minor surgical procedures.
• Perform vital signs (BP, TPR), height, weight, and calculate Body Mass Index (BMI).
• Conduct visual acuity tests, color vision tests, audiometry, and pulmonary function tests.
• Collect or assist with the collection of specimens, including urine (clean catch/midstream), stool (occult blood, ova and parasites), wet mount, GC, Chlamydia, PAP smear, and sputum.
• Operate and maintain medical equipment, including oxygen administration units, autoclave units, surgical instruments, suction machines, hyfercator, EKG units, and liquid nitrogen.
• Maintain medical records, ensure patient confidentiality, and uphold standards of patient care.
• Use electronic medical records and basic computer systems.
• Adhere to HIPAA, Universal Precautions, sterile techniques, and principles of infection control.
• Identify and operate common radiology diagnostic tests (e.g., UGI, BE, IVP, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI).

Requirements

• Valid and current LVN license in the State of California.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (American Heart Association standards).
• Certification in IV Therapy.
• Certificate of completion for Immunization administration and PPD skin test administration.
• 1–3 years of experience working in acute, ambulatory, or urgent care.
• General knowledge of HIPAA.
• Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a school or university health center.

Special Conditions

• This position is appointed at 0.40 FTE and subject to annual renewal.
• Schedule is Monday–Friday during traditional work hours, though weekend or non-traditional hours may be required for special projects, busy periods, or strict deadlines.
• Employment contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and monitoring of licensure, and successful completion of a background review or credentialing process.
• Must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations for healthcare employees, including hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening.
• Must comply with CDPH and UC COVID-19 Vaccine Policy (proof of full vaccination or approved exception).
• Responsible for reporting potential conflicts of interest to a supervisor in a timely manner.

Pay

The expected pay range for this position is $41.08 per hour.
