Visual Information Specialist
Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, New York, NY.
About the role
As a Visual Information Specialist, you will advise port managers and field staff on communications policies, design and oversee the production of CBP informational materials using state-of-the-art visual technologies, and conduct research to source imagery that supports agency initiatives.
This position starts at a salary of $50.54 (GS-12, Step 1) to $65.71 (GS-12, Step 10). Visit the locality pay tables by geographic area. Responsibilities
- Advising and consulting with port managers and field office staff on developing and implementing integrated communications/media policies and programs.
- Conceptualizing, designing, and overseeing the production of CBP informational materials for the Web and print using DHS/CBP creative guidelines.
- Developing new methods of conveying messages regarding CBP initiatives, policies, and procedures by employing state-of-the-art visual information technologies.
- Performing research to locate images suitable for inclusion in various visual products.
- Providing visual information services and content in support of OFO's strategic communication efforts.
- Using an assortment of technologies to encourage support for agency programs and policies.
- Assisting in designing and producing internal and external information material for SharePoint.
- Assisting in developing and shaping content for dissemination/publication via multiple communication channels including SharePoint, Internet posting, and social media.
- Collaborating with customers and subject-matter specialists on proposals for video and still productions.
Requirements

Qualifications
You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11), performing duties such as those listed in the responsibilities section.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Background Investigation
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requires all applicants to undergo a thorough background investigation prior to employment. During the screening and/or background investigation process, you will be asked questions regarding any felony criminal convictions or current felony charges, the use of illegal drugs, and the use of non-prescribed controlled substances.
Residency
There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement, you may request an exception by meeting one or more of the following conditions:

Probationary Period
All employees new to the federal government must serve a one-year probationary period during the first year of their initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment.
