About the role

VISTA (Valuing Incarcerated Scholars through Academia) is a BA degree completion program at Centinela State Prison operated by SDSU. It offers degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies (IS3D) and Journalism, with plans to develop a Humanities degree. Courses are taught on-site at the prison under the terms of Article 40 of the California Faculty Association contract.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in Journalism and Media Studies, Communication, Design, and General Education.
  • Lead courses at Centinela State Prison.
  • Receive training to teach in this unique and rewarding environment.
  • Compensated for mileage to and from the prison for training and teaching.
  • Teach in-person courses under the terms of Article 40 of the California Faculty Association contract.
  • Work as additional employment under the terms of Article 38 of SDSU's contract.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching higher education in Journalism and Media Studies, Communication, Design, and General Education.
  • Experience teaching in carceral or alternative settings is welcome but not required.
  • Experience teaching in prisons is welcome but not required.
  • Lived experience of incarceration or system-impaction is encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Temporary, tenure-track, or tenured faculty (including non-SDSU faculty).
  • Qualified to teach in the disciplines noted above.

Skills

  • Ability to engage in inclusive classroom environments.
  • Participation in collaborative planning.

Benefits

  • Paid for two required trainings, one at SDSU and one at CEN.
  • Paid for mileage from the SDSU campus to the prison for training and teaching.

Pay

A minimum of 10 students per course, with an anticipated salary range available here.

Schedule

Courses are taught on-site at Centinela State Prison under the terms of Article 40 of the California Faculty Association contract.

  • Mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
  • Required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • Background check required, including a criminal records check.
