Visiting Assistant Professor of Law

About the role

Northwestern Pritzker School of Law invites applications for Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) positions with an expected start date in advance of the 2027‑28 academic year. The VAP program provides recent law graduates with full participation in the scholarly community, targeted mentorship, opportunities to present research, and academic placement support. Appointments are typically for one year with the possibility of a one‑year reappointment.

Responsibilities

• Teach a substantive law course each year of the appointment, in consultation with the Associate Dean for curriculum.
• Engage in the school’s scholarly community, including presenting research and participating in academic events.
• Receive and act on targeted mentorship aimed at preparing for a tenure‑track position at a top law school.
• Utilize Northwestern’s extensive teaching support resources.

Qualifications

• Graduates of any law school, any year of graduation.
• Experience practicing law is encouraged.
• Or a Ph.D. in any field with sustained scholarly interest in law.
• Demonstrated potential to pursue a tenure‑track position at a top law school after completing the program.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this twelve‑month academic appointment is $75,000 – $85,000, subject to negotiation based on experience, qualifications, departmental budget, and market comparables.
