Position Duties

  • Pitches, accepts and develops story ideas that have news value for the OSU community.
  • Conducts research and necessary interviews to produce thorough video news stories that include multiple relevant perspectives.
  • Remains objective and provides fair and accurate coverage.
  • Pursues news in a timely fashion.
  • Covers breaking news as needed.
  • Shoots and edits video, writes scripts and provides narration for video stories.
  • Edits together news videos between 60 - 1:30, under direction of TV news producer and/or publication editors-in-chief.
  • Prepares information for on-screen graphics.
  • Shares stories on social media to reach audience.
  • May be asked to present their story live in studio.
  • May be asked to create horizontal and vertical versions of stories.
  • Attends all staff and team meetings, including weekly reporter meeting.
  • Participates in critique sessions with producer to make any necessary revisions in style or content.
  • Able to act as mentors to new hires.

Communication

  • Responds to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN.
  • Ensures you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basecamp, Discord, etc.).
  • Proactively communicates work status with editor(s).
  • Notifies adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur.

Leadership

  • Follows all OMN policies and procedures including professionalism and deadlines.
  • Ensures designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program.
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term.
