About the role

We are seeking a Vice President, Project Management Office (PMO) to join our Innovation team. This role is critical for setting the enterprise vision, strategy, and governance for project execution across the Research & Development (R&D) organization and broader business.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead enterprise-wide PMO strategy, governance, and operating model aligned with corporate objectives and growth priorities.
  • Chair the NPD Review Board across all business units (UR, GI, and MCH), ensuring disciplined prioritization, investment decisions, and portfolio alignment with long-term strategy.
  • Provide executive oversight to the executive leadership team, offering data-driven insights to guide strategic decisions, capital allocation, and innovation investments.
  • Drive transformation of PMO capabilities to a best-in-class function supporting enterprise-wide initiatives beyond R&D.
  • Own the end-to-end R&D project portfolio, ensuring optimal balance of innovation, risk, regulatory requirements, and financial return.
  • Lead development and execution of the multi-year R&D portfolio strategy and annual operating plan.
  • Oversee portfolio financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and ROI analysis for new product development programs.
  • Implement advanced portfolio management tools, analytics, and dashboards to enable real-time visibility and decision-making.
  • Ensure consistent, predictable, and high-quality execution of all projects through standardized methodologies tailored to the medical device lifecycle.
  • Drive accountability for on-time, on-budget delivery while meeting regulatory, quality, and commercial objectives.
  • Establish enterprise-wide performance metrics, KPIs, and benchmarks for project execution and PMO effectiveness.
  • Lead portfolio risk management strategy, proactively identifying and mitigating risks related to regulatory approval, product development, and market entry.
  • Partner with Commercial, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Operations, and Finance leaders to align priorities, resource allocation, and go-to-market strategies.
  • Influence and align global stakeholders across functions and regions to ensure seamless execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Present portfolio performance, strategic insights, and key risks to executive leadership and the Board with clarity and impact.
  • Oversee enterprise resource planning, capacity modeling, and capability development to support current and future portfolio demands.
  • Drive workforce strategy for project management talent, including succession planning and capability building.
  • Ensure optimal deployment of resources across competing priorities while maintaining agility.
  • Establish and evolve best-in-class PMO standards, methodologies, and governance frameworks.
  • Lead the development of a global PMO community of practice, fostering knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Drive digital transformation of PMO systems, tools, and reporting capabilities.
  • Champion a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Ensure full compliance with global regulatory requirements (FDA, ISO 13485, MDR, etc.) across all programs.
  • Provide executive oversight of design controls, risk management, and product lifecycle governance.
  • Partner with Regulatory and Quality leadership to ensure successful submissions and sustained compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, or related field; advanced degree (MBA, MS) strongly preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in project/program/portfolio management within the medical device or highly regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated success leading enterprise PMO functions and managing large, complex global portfolios.
  • Deep expertise in medical device development, including design controls, regulatory compliance (FDA, ISO 13485), and commercialization processes.
  • Proven ability to influence executive stakeholders and drive strategic decision-making at the C-suite and Board level.
  • Strong financial acumen, including portfolio investment analysis, budgeting, and ROI optimization.
  • Track record of building and leading high-performing teams, developing leaders, and driving organizational transformation.
  • Expertise in portfolio management systems and digital PMO tools (e.g., Planview, ProChain, or equivalent).
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and change management skills with the ability to operate effectively in a global, matrixed environment.
